South Sound Deanery
The Catholic Archdiocese of Seattle, Washington State, USA.

Aberdeen area, Olympia area, Southwest area, Morton. General description below.

Why visit our Deanery? We are a short drive from some of the nicest cities and most beautiful scenery in the US. You can see some links and photos of our Pacific Northwest Region, and nearby Cascade Volcanoes. You might also find interesting the Recrational opportunities in East Lewis County. You can also check the Mass schedula listing from the Archdiocese of Seattle.

Very Rev. James Lee, Dean

The Catholic Archdiocese of Seattle covers all of Western Washington state and the South Sound Deanery is one of 10 deaneries within the Archdiocese. This deanery runs from the Pacific Ocean to the bottom of Puget Sound to Mt. Rainier then south to include all of Lewis County. The boundary cuts back to the ocean and includes the Long Beach peninsula. The red box on the map indicates the approximate location of the deanery.

This deanery consists of a number of different types of parishes, with ministries that reflect the people and economy of their local communities. There are large urban parishes in Olympia and Lacey. Commercial and recreational fishing is important along the coast; logging has been the mainstay of the rural economies, with tourism important in some areas. There is some farming. These parishes tend to be small and struggling, especially with restrictions on logging and fishing. Multicultural ministry is a growing reality.

Because we have fewer and fewer priests, ministry within the deanery has moved more and more away from the previous norm of a priest pastor for each parish. By the year 2005 we may only have 10 priests to serve this entire deanery.

The maps on this page are from the US Census Bureau Tiger mapping service. For street maps of individual towns try Lycos maps. (Go to town below and copy the town, state, and zip; next click on Lycos and paste the town, state, and zip into the search field and submit.)
