Prayers for Holy Week from the Lutheran Church

 (They should be useful to Catholics or anyone.)

Palm Sunday

INTROIT.*

BE not far from me, O LORD, O my strength, hasten to help me.
Save me from the lion's mouth and deliver me from the horns of the unicorns.

Ps. My God, my God, why have you forsaken me why are you so far from helping me?

Glory be to the Father, etc.

COLLECT.**

ALMIGHTY and Everlasting God, Who have sent your Son, our Savior Jesus Christ, to take upon Him our flesh, and to suffer death upon the Cross, that all mankind should follow the example of His great humility:

Mercifully grant that we may both follow the example of His patience, and also be made partakers of His resurrection; through the same Jesus Christ, your Son, our Lord, Who lives and reigns with and the Holy Ghost, ever One God, world without end. Amen.

[The Epistle and Gospel are of course optional for personal prayer,
but would have been used in the liturgy. You could use them for meditation on the particular day.]

Monday of Holy Week

INTROIT.
PLEAD my cause, O LORD, with them that strive with me: fight against then that fight against me.
Take hold of shield and buckler : and stand up for mine help.

Ps. Draw out also the spear, and stop the way against them that persecute me say unto my soul, I am your salvation.

Glory be to the Father, etc.

COLLECT.

GRANT, we beseech you, Almighty God, that we, who amid so many adversities do fail through our own infirmities, may be restored through the Passion and Intercession of your Only- begotten Son, Who lives and reigns, with you and the Holy Ghost, ever One God, world without end. Amen.

Tuesday of Holy Week

INTROIT.
GOD forbid that I should glory save in the Cross of our Lord Jesus Christ.
In Him is salvation, life, and resurrection from the dead; by Him we are redeemed and set at liberty.

Ps. God be merciful unto us, and bless us, and cause His face to shine upon us.

Glory be to the Father, etc.

COLLECT.
ALMIGHTY and Everlasting God, grant us grace so to contemplate the Passion of our Lord, that we may find therein forgiveness for our sins; through the same Jesus Christ, your Son, our Lord, Who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Ghost, ever One God, world without end. Amen.

Wednesday of Holy Week

INTROIT.
AT the Name of Jesus every knee shall bow : of things in heaven, and things in earth, and things under the earth.
For He became obedient unto death, even the death of the Cross wherefore He is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.

Pr. Hear my prayer, O Lord : and let my cry come unto you.

Glory be to the Father, etc.

COLLECT.

GRANT, we beseech you, Almighty God, that we, who for our evil deeds are continually afflicted, may mercifully be relieved by the Passion of your Only-begotten Son, Who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Ghost, ever One God, world without end. Amen.

Epistle: Isaiah 62:11-63: 7. Gospel: Luke 22: 1-23:42.

 

Holy Thursday

Introit the same as for THE TUESDAY TN HOLY WEEK.

COLLECT.

O LORD God, Who has left unto us in a wonderful Sacrament a memorial of your Passion: Grant, we beseech you, that we may so use this Sacrament of your Body and Blood, that the fruits of your redemption may continually be manifest in us; Who lives and reigns with the Father and the Holy Ghost, ever One God, world without end. Amen.

EPISTLE. 1 Corinthian. 11: 23-34. GOSPEL. John 13:15

 

Good Friday

INTROIT.
SURELY He has borne our grief and carried our sorrows He was wounded for our transgressions, He was bruised for our iniquities.
All we like sheep have gone astray and the Lord has laid on Him the iniquity of us all.

Ps. Hear my prayer, O LORD: and 1st my cry come unto you.

Glory be to the Father, etc.

COLLECT.

ALMIGHTY God, we beseech you graciously to behold this your family, for which our Lord Jesus Christ was contented to be betrayed, and given up into the hands of wicked men, and to suffer death upon the Cross; through the same Jesus Christ, your Son, our Lord, Who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Ghost, ever One God, world without end. Amen.

Epistle: Isaiah 52:13-53, 12. Gospel John 18:1-19.
 

Other Good Friday Collects

MERCIFUL and Everlasting God, Who has not spared your only Son, but delivered Him up for us all, that He might bear our sins upon the Cross: Grant that our hearts may be so fixed with steadfast faith in Him that we may not fear the power of any adversaries; through the same Jesus Christ, your Son, our Lord. Amen.

ALMIGHTY and Everlasting God Who has willed that your Son should bear for us the pains of the Cross that you might remove from us the power of the adversary, [the Devil]: Help us so remember and give thanks for our Lord's Passion that we may obtain remission of sin and redemption from everlasting death; through the same Jesus Christ, your Son, our Lord. Amen.

 

Holy Saturday

 
COLLECT.

GOD, Who did enlighten this most holy night with the glory of the Lord's Resurrection: Preserve in all your people the spirit of adoption which you has given, so that renewed in body and soul they may perform unto you a pure service; through Jesus Christ, your Son, our Lord. Who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Ghost, ever One God, world without in end. Amen.

[For Roman Catholics, Holy Saturday is when Adults are received into the church. Prayer for these new Christians would be most appropriate. The Roman Catholic service, called the Easter Vigil, is the most solemn, and rich of the church year. It is like keeping watch in the night at the tomb waiting for first light and resurrection.]

Epistle, from the Roman Catholic Easter Vigil: Romans 6:3-11. The Gospel will be one of the following:
Matt. 28:1-10. Mark 16:1-17. Luke 24:1-12.
 

Easter

 

INTROIT.

 

WHEN I awake, I am still with you. Hallelujah you has laid your hand upon me. Hallelujah.

Such knowledge is too wonderful for me it is high, I cannot attain unto it. Hallelujah. Hallelujah

Ps. O Lord, you has searched me and known me; you know my down-sitting and mine uprising.

Glory be to the Father, etc.

Or,
HE is risen, Hallelujah! Why seek ye the Living among the dead? Hallelujah.

Remember how He spoke unto you, Hallelujah the Son of Man must be crucified, and the third day rise again. Hallelujah. Hallelujah.

Ps. You crowned Him with glory and honor; you made Him to have dominion over the works of your hands.

Glory be to the Father, etc.

COLLECT.

ALMIGHTY God, Who, through your Only-begotten Son, Jesus Christ, has overcome death, an opened unto us the gate of everlasting life: We humbly beseech you, that, a you put into our minds good desires, so by your continual help we may bring the same to good effect through Jesus Christ, your Son, our Lord, Who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Ghost, ever One God world without end. Amen.

EPISTLE. 1 Corinthians 5: 6-8. Gospel, Mark 16:1-8.

 

OTHER EASTER COLLECTS.

GRANT, we beseech you, Almighty God, that we who celebrate your Paschal Feast, kindled with heavenly desires, may ever thirst for the Fountain of Life, Jesus Christ, your Son, our Lord, Who lives etc. Amen.

GRANT, we beseech you, Almighty God, that we who celebrate the solemnities of the Lord's Resurrection, may by the renewal of your Holy Spirit rise again from the death of the soul; through the same Jesus Christ, your Son, our Lord. Amen.
